Artist Talk: Alexander Tyagny-Ryadno

On October 19, the Belarusian Union of Photographers hosted a creative evening with Alexander Tyagny-Ryadno, a distinguished Russian photographer known for his vivid chronicles of Moscow life during the late Soviet and post-Soviet decades.

Born in 1956 in Moscow, Alexander Tyagny-Ryadno graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute and initially worked as a design engineer and video engineer before earning a degree in journalism from Moscow State University. Beginning in 1984, he worked as a photographer and photo editor for leading Soviet and Russian media, including Izvestia, Sobesednik, Sovetskaya Kultura, Mecenat, and Travel + Leisure. He is a member of the Russian Union of Journalists, the Union of Photographers of Russia, and the International Federation of Artists (UNESCO).

To mark the photographer’s 60th anniversary, RussPressPhoto published a three-volume monograph Photography – A Way of Life – Photography, accompanied by a major solo exhibition at the Manege Exhibition Hall in Moscow. By 2019, he had held around 50 solo exhibitions in Russia, the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine.

During the event, Alexander Tyagny-Ryadno shared stories from his years as a Moscow photojournalist in the 1980s and 1990s, reflecting on the evolution of the profession, the challenges of mass digitalization, and the growing value of traditional photographic printing techniques. The evening drew many members and guests of the Union, who actively participated in the discussion.

At the close of the meeting, the guest of honor presented his three-volume book to the Union’s library. He also praised the Belarusian Union of Photographers for preserving its exhibition space something that, as he noted, the Union of Photo Artists in Moscow unfortunately lost. Tyagny-Ryadno welcomed the Belarusian initiative to move beyond the outdated concept of “photo art” and expressed readiness to assist in organizing future joint contests and exhibitions.
