Contemporary Photography of China: A Dialogue of Cultures

On August 29, 2025, the office of the Belarusian Union of Photographers in Minsk hosted a meeting with a delegation of photographic artists from Shanghai, led by curator Song Yunkan.

The delegation included four outstanding authors representing different generations of the Shanghai school of photography – Shen Zhonghai, Xu Haifeng, Ye Zile, and Chen Chuanduan. Their works form part of the exhibition project Dialogue of Cultures, which reveals the multilayered image of contemporary China through the language of photography.

During the meeting, both sides discussed key areas of cooperation in the field of photography and visual art. Special attention was given to the exchange of experience between the creative unions of Belarus and China, the joint organization of exhibitions, and the development of new international initiatives.

A separate focus was devoted to the prospects of cultural exchange – including programs to support young photographers, educational initiatives, workshops, and photo tours. Participants emphasized the importance of dialogue as a format in which photography serves not only as an artistic medium but also as a means of strengthening intercultural understanding.

As a result of the meeting, the sides outlined plans for future collaborative exhibitions and projects that will present a broader context of contemporary photography from both Belarus and China.
